Zlatan Ibrahimovic awakened LA Galaxy’s club record for goals in a year in their 7-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Sunday and netted a hat-trick.
The 37-year-old scored his 25th, 24th and 26th goals of the effort to help snap a four-match winless run.
Ibrahimovic scored his first goal before exceeding the previous goalscoring record of Carlos Ruiz with two left-footed strikes after his initial penalty was saved.
Joe Corona, Uriel Antuna and a dual from Sebastian Lletget helped Galaxy.
Ibrahimovic has scored 48 goals in 51 games at the MLS.
“I think I am the best ever to play in MLS. And that’s without joking,” Ibrahimovic explained.
“Scoring goals is simple, you simply need to be like Zlatan and it’s forthcoming,” said the former Manchester United striker, who’s two objectives behind leading scorer Carlos Vela.
“I try to aid the staff in the very best way and that’s by accomplishing goals. I scored and make it a lot easier and I must continue, I need to help my team and that’s to score goals.
“It’s a fantastic result, it turned into a good game.
“The result says something else but the first half was quite even, we played against a good team that plays good football. At the second we had been stronger and when we got the opportunities we had been scoring so that has been the difference.
“It’s great, we still have four games to go. To win, to find the confidence to score many goals for your goal difference. Everybody did a great job, even if we had been a tiny bit tired in the finish, but we did a fantastic job.”
LA Galaxy went into just two facing Portland, a point ahead of San Jose along with fifth place in the Western Alliance.
