The race and marathon walking at the Tokyo Olympics of the summer have now been transferred to Sapporo – 800km to the north – because of its cooler conditions.
Steps to fight the heat in the capital, such as water sprays and shade, are trialled at test events.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athlete welfare wasin the center of fluctuations.
Sapporo can be up to six degrees cooler than Tokyo in peak summer.
