Lewis Hamilton on the challenge of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc

Lewis Hamilton says he will have to work”twice as hard” to keep ahead of rising F1 stars Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc and verstappen, together with championship leader Hamilton, have demonstrated the season’s stars so far. Mercedes’ Hamilton along with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen have won just two of the five races apiece, with Ferrari’s Leclerc winning another in his breakthrough success past Sunday.
Aged 34, Hamilton has been 13 years older than both 21-year-olds and has been impressed with their own progress.
“They are both doing a phenomenal job,” Hamilton told Sky Sports in Italy ahead of the weekend’s race at Monza.
“It’s interesting to watch their travel since I have been there at that age in the earlier part of my career and visiting the trials and tribulations that you go through. I could empathise with what they are currently going through.
“I’ve got to work twice as hard today to keep ahead of these as they’re fresh and young and energised, and it’s harder when you get older to stay as fit, as driven and as sharp.”
Even though Verstappen and Leclerc are all contributing the sport’s next generation of drivers, Hamilton remains F1’s standard-bearer and directs the world championship by a sizable 65-point perimeter with eight races.
The five-time champion insists”I don’t know the amount of things I have” but states he keeps tabs on his race ending positions and”that’s exactly what I try to maintain as large as possible”.
“I have no idea when and if or how the rest of the championship will go but I have to try and make sure I keep punching at the elevated level,” said the winner of eight of 2019’s hitherto 13 races.
Mercedes are the defending five-time champions of this Italian GP with gone unbeaten at the quickest circuit of F1 since the engine era started in 2014. Hamilton is the joint Monza record holder with five successes complete.
But has the remarkable win for Ferrari at Belgium of Leclerc recognized the home group !
