Not for the first time in her career, Billesdon Brook Made a Little Newmarket Angry with victory.
The Richard Hannon-trained daughter of Champs Elysees shocked many with a 66/1 victory in racings Headquarters, after which she failed to triumph in her following five racecourse appearances in last seasons 1000 Guineas.
However, the symptoms of a return to her very best were there for everyone to see after wins at Chelmsford and Goodwood this summer months and, professionally directed by Sean Levey, she swooped late in the final stages to register her second Group One victory – now in 16/1.
Falmouth Stakes winner Veracious (10/1) drifted markedly from the betting beforehand but seemed to have made a race-winning movement when sent to the front by winner jockey-elect Oisin Murphy that a furlong and a half by the finish, but she could not cope with the strong-staying winner and had to pay for a length and a half second.
Third moved to recent Matron Stakes heroine Iridessa (4/1), while front-runner Laurens could not assert the fairytale end to her livelihood and weakened out of the reckoning late on.
