England’s Jofra Archer will raise his game when he renews his contest with Australia batsman Steve Smith in the fourth Ashes Test that week, states fellow fast bowler Stuart Broad.
Smith missed England’s third-Test triumph with concussion after being hit on the throat by an Archer bouncer in Lord’s.
“He hasn’t actually got me out,” said Smith, who’ll perform at Old Trafford.
Broad told BBC Sport:”Jofra is a wonderful bowler – but he’s a much greater bowler if he gets contested.”
The Test begins with the series level at 1-1 after England’s epic one-wicket success at Headingley, on Wednesday.
“I know when Steve Smith walks to the crease, Jofra will likely be walking into [captain] Joe Root stating:’Give me this ball'” added Broad.
Archer, 24, qualified to play England in March, made his debut in May, bowled the superb over as the hosts won the World Cup in July and has obtained 13 Test wickets at an average of 13.53 since his very first appearance at Lord’s.
“We have seen him rack up to a good deal of high-pressure scenarios already in his youthful international profession,” said Broad.
“I’m going to be a very curious viewer out of mid-on because they are two world-class gamers going against each other, even using a bit of verbal niggle going around also.
“That’s what Ashes cricket is about – the theatre, the delight, the pleasure.”
Smith retired injury on 80 on the fourth day of the second Test after ducking to an Archer delivery at 92mphHe had already received treatment after being hit on the arm by a short ball from the bowler.
Although Smith returned to create 92, he had been replaced with concussion replacement Marnus Labuschagne at the next innings as Australia survived to draw on the Test.
Smith, who produced centuries is averaging 126 was dismissed by Chris Woakes and by Broad.
Why was Ben Stokes’ Test at Headingley the exciting England triumph of all time?
